Val Phelps

Through college & for several years after went the "flower child" route. Married an artist in the mid 70's. Took on a foster child in the 80's (he's my son though never legally adopted).
Moved to Denver in the early 90's. Had a serious bicycle accident while visiting KC in 1996; in a coma for three days. Given a 50/50 chance to live & told I'd never ride a bicycle again. Had to learn to walk & talk in months of therapy. The head injury caused my personality to revert to the "old" Val & that eventually led to a divorce in 2001.
Started cycling again & eventually became an ultra distance cyclist. Met a woman in 2003 that cycles & moved to Durango. Lived there until moving to Dallas 3 years ago.
My wife & I have become nationally recognized endurance cyclists. We have both ridden our bikes over ten thousand miles a year for the last several years. This summer we're planning on two 1200 kilometer (750 mile) rides that need to be completed in under 90 hours.
I've traded the fast cars for fast bicycles. The "old" Val still doesn't seem to know when to say "no".

Great times with Larry McCandless. Sorry to hear he's gone. I'd relay stories but I'm not sure the statute of limitations has expired.

Sorry I missed the 40th reunion; I'll try for the 50th.
