Attended University of Texas at Austin 1969-1972; Attended Baylor Law School 1972-1975; I was a prosecutor in Bell County, Texas (just North of Austin) for over 8 years; became the top assistant DA in Midland, Texas for 19 months; have been in private practice in Midland, Texas, as a criminal defense attorney, since 1986. The best move I ever made was getting out of government employment and hanging out my own shingle. I am an author of Volumes 29 and 29A of the Texas Practice Series. I've been married for 35 years to my wife, LaVerne. We have a 33 year old daughter (CPA) in the Ft. Worth/Dallas area and a 28 year old son who is an attorney with me here in Midland.
I remember well watching Perry Mason on CBS in September of 1958, at the age of 7, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for the first time and, at the end of the show, I knew I wanted to be just like Perry Mason. I feel very lucky because I have been able to do that for 23 years. I have had 3 murder trials so far in 2009, and have 2 more upcoming. Although I have had 379 jury trials I am not burned out. I enjoy presenting oral argument in New Orleans, before the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, once or twice each year.
I really enjoy living in the Midland/Odessa area, in west Texas, and plan on remaining here permanently.
I typically come to Kansas City in October for the birthday of my mother, who is 91 years old. When I am K.C. I enjoy visiting with my two brothers and their families, as well as Mike Ward, who has been my best friend since we were 5 years old.
I enjoyed coaching little league baseball, basketball, and flag football for several years. Those have been wonderful memories.
My wife and I have a grandson who will be 2 years old in September, and a granddaughter arriving in September.
Although I doubt I can make the reunion, I wish each of my classmates all the best.
