To the 1969 Class – Southwest High School

I am so grateful to have this opportunity to write to you because 1969 was an exceptional year! As I re-read the contest sheets of the Concert Choir, the comments from the judges tell the story: “wonderful sound, mature tone quality -- perfect intonation, clean, clear diction – great musical effect – you are a tremendous musical instrument – for this many (166), Carder, you do the impossible!” It is good for me to remember, but without your interest, pride in the choir and talent, this could not have been accomplished.

The following performances: Camelot, Redskin Revels, Assemblies, City Festivals, Christmas and Easter programs, singing for the Missouri State Teachers Convention, The Choir, Indian Belles, Male Octet singing for every (seemed that way to me) organization in Kansas City, -- all prove we were on the right track. Each one of you contributed so much to the vocal music program.

I retired in 1995 after teaching thirty-nine years, full time, in the music classrooms of the greater Kansas City high schools: William Chrisman (1956-1958), Southeast (1958-1960), Southwest (1960-1969) and Penn Valley Community College (1969-1995). After retirement I taught ten more years as an adjunct faculty member at PVCC through 2005. I have organized and directed several community choirs, and I recently retired from church music after fifty-eight years as a choir director. I married a charming lady, Marty, in 1989, and we will celebrate our twentieth anniversary this December.

I loved my musical career – and Southwest High School stands out as a crowning achievement. My sincere regards to each of you!
